From Homelessness to Hope: A Young Girl’s Journey to Education
As part of their fieldwork, DBNJ team visited Nirmala’s family and learned about their dire living conditions. Though they had a house, it was in a severely dilapidated state, forcing them to seek refuge at MGM Hospital for several months for her Husband’s Moseses treatment for Prelacies. The family also mentioned that their daughter was staying with them.
Upon visiting their address, the team discovered that the entire house was at risk of collapsing, making it unfit for living. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, they arranged for the family to be sheltered at a facility for the urban homeless. Unfortunately, during their stay at the shelter, the girl's father, who had been bedridden due to illness, passed away.

Since the family lacked proper identification documents, the team facilitated the girl's admission to Vanchanagiri Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in the 6th grade. However, after joining, she stopped attending school and instead stayed near her temporary home.
To ensure she continued her education, the team intervened once again and, after discussions with school authorities, successfully re-admitted her to Labour Colony Government High School in the 6th grade. With educational support from Navajeevan, she now attends school regularly.
Meanwhile, her mother has resumed work as a daily laborer, striving to provide for her daughter. Additionally, with a ₹10,000 scholarship from Bosco Seva Kendra (BSK), the girl now has the necessary financial support for her studies.
Through continued follow-ups and intervention, the team is ensuring that she remains in school without further disruptions, giving her a chance at a brighter future despite the challenges she has faced.
